Tripp Tyner is a CrossFitter from our 'Red's Gym' program at Mars Inc. in West Chester, PA. Here is his story!
Prior to joining CrossFit Red's Gym, I felt that I was a fairly fit guy. At 40, I was 6 ft, and weight about 190 lbs. I was a runner. I would run 3 days a week, averaging 16-18 miles per week. I didn't do any weight training, as it bored me to death. I just ran.
Then I learned about CrossFit.
In October 2007, I joined CrossFit Red's Gym thinking that with my cardio conditioning from running, this would be a piece of cake. Was I ever wrong. Day one workout was "Jeremy", which is 21-15-9 rep rounds of overhead squats and burpees. It took me 18 minutes, my heart was pounding out of my chest, and my lungs were on fire. I'm surprised that I didn't lose my lunch!
Since that day, I've been as faithful as possible to my Crossfit workouts. I try for a minimum of 3 days per week, preferably 4. But with family, work, travel, etc, my workout routine sometimes suffers. Nonetheless, I've seen changes to my overall fitness and body composition. I've put on a significant amount of muscle. I actually weigh more now than when I started, however, my pants are much looser. I no longer have any back pain and my recovery time in exercising is much shorter. I've seen a tremendous improvement in my core strength and composition. When I first started, I could do 3 pull-ups in 1 minute. That number is up to 23. I now work out with weights that I never dreamed I would be able to handle. The Olympic movements have improved my athleticism, coordination and strength.
I still run, however, I now see the benefits of the intense short workouts of CrossFit. I've created a workout schedule that allows me to do both.
I still want to improve on my cardio. But I've come along way. That workout from day one that took 18 minutes..... its down to 5:05. I hope to break the 5 minute mark soon.
